World champions Edwards, May win at Italian meet

29 August 2001 – Rovereto, Italy - World champions Jonathan Edwards and Fiona May scored convincing wins in the triple and long jump events at ‘’Palio della Quercia" (Oak Prize), Italy’s oldest athletics meet, Wednesday night. 

Edwards beat British compatriot Larry Achike by 17 centimetres in the men’s triple jump, with a winning measure of 17.27 metres in this northern city.  English-born Italian jumper May took the women’s long jump with a leap of 6.71 metres, ahead of Trude Vaszi of Hungary, who had 6.60.

Fabrizio Mori, a former world champion and silver medalist at this year’s Championships in Edmonton, beat Jamaican Jan Weakley and Britain’s Antonu Borsumato in the 400-metre hurdles, with a strong finish and winning time of 48.72 seconds.

Nigerian sprinter Uchenna Emedolu won the 100-metre dash in 10.33 seconds, edging Darvis Patton of the United States by .04.

Brazilian runner Sanderlei Parrela won the men’s 400-metre in 1:44.49 minutes.

Argentina Paulino of Mozambique won the women’s 800-metre and Russian Yelenia Isinbayeva the women’s pole vault, clearing 4.20 metres.

The next major meet in Italy is the last IAAF Grand Prix meeting of the year (GPII) at Rieti on Sunday.
